What is a monotype?

Using pigmented paints and crayons, the artist composes their image on an acrylic plate. The plate is then printed onto damp paper using an etching press. Because all of the pigment is transferred to the paper, only one exists. Sometimes multiple plates are printed sequentially to build layers of transparent color. The marks can be just as expressive as any painting, but the pigment sits on the paper with an uncanny flatness.
